After My Divorce, I Paid a Stranger to Draw My Soulmate. I Didn't Expect to Recognize Him.

Five months before I met him, I already had his face pinned to my refrigerator. I just didn't know it yet.

I'm not a "woo-woo" person. I did hospital billing for twenty-two years and still balance my checkbook by hand. But enough women have asked me about this now that I figured I'd write it down once, properly.

The quiet years

My marriage ended the way a lot of them do. Not with a fight, but with a long silence. Twenty-six years, two grown kids, and one morning I realized we hadn't had a real conversation in about four years.

Everyone said, "Get on the apps." I lasted three weeks: men who looked nothing like their photos, men who talked about their ex-wives for two hours, men who vanished mid-conversation. I deleted everything and told myself I was fine.

Fine is a funny word. You can say it a thousand times and it never quite turns true.

My friend Carol and her "silly" drawing

It was Carol from book club who brought it up. She'd been widowed for six years, and one night over wine she pulled out her phone and showed me a pencil sketch of a man. Kind eyes, a little crooked nose, gray at the temples.

"That's Tom," she said. I said, "Who's Tom?" She grinned. "My boyfriend. I got this sketch eight months before I met him."

I rolled my eyes so hard I nearly pulled something. Then she showed me a photo of the two of them at a lake. I'll be honest: the resemblance made the hair on my arms stand up.

The drawing was from a woman named Tina Aldea, a psychic artist who, as Carol explained it, draws the person she senses you're meant to be with. Tina says she has done this for more than 43,000 people.

What it actually involved

I want to describe this part carefully, because it's what most people ask me about.

There was no phone call, no crystal ball, nothing strange. When I went to Tina's page, it simply asked me a few short questions about myself: whether I'm a man or a woman, who I'd like to see, my date of birth, and what matters most to me in love. That took about a minute.

Tina explains that she uses those answers, especially your birth date, to tune into your energy before she draws. So don't skip them or rush through them. That's the part that makes the sketch yours.

After that, I saw the price, paid, and the sketch and a written reading arrived in my email.

It was $37. I've spent more than that on a dinner I didn't enjoy.

The day it arrived

I opened the email in my car in the grocery store parking lot, because I couldn't wait. My hands were actually shaking a little. A man, maybe late fifties. Broad face, a short beard, a little laugh line on one side only. The reading talked about someone steady, someone who "fixes things with his hands."

I didn't recognize him. I printed it on the good paper anyway, still warm from the printer, and I remember running my thumb over that one laugh line before I stuck it on the fridge, half as a joke. My son saw it at Thanksgiving and asked if I'd started dating a cartoon.

What I didn't expect was how it changed me. I stopped scrolling past faces. I started saying yes to things: a church potluck, a pottery class, my cousin's barbecue. Somewhere in the back of my head I was always looking.

Five months later

It was a hardware store, of all places. I was trying to figure out which hinge I needed for a cabinet door, and a man in a flannel shirt asked if I wanted a hand. Short beard. A laugh line on one side.

I'm not going to pretend I knew right away. It was the third coffee before I went home, looked at my fridge, and had to sit down on the kitchen floor.

His name is Dave. He fixes things with his hands. We've been together a little over a year now.

I'm not telling you this will happen to you. I'm telling you it gave me a reason to start looking again.

I'll be straight with you, the way I'd want someone to be with me. I can't promise Tina's sketch will lead you to anyone. Carol got lucky, I got lucky, and plenty of women just enjoy the reading and leave it at that. But for me, the biggest thing it did was get me off the couch and back out into the world, open again.

If you've been telling yourself "fine" for a while now, maybe it's worth a minute of your time.
